“What’s your name ma’am?” the girl in the uniform asked.
“Sylvia Porter and I’m rational and not in shock,” I said.
“No offense Sylvia, but you aren’t in the best shape to make that decision. Take a look at yourself. Let me at least take a look at those cuts. Then if you need it, we can take you to the emergency room and they can clean you up at least.” she waited a second then said,“I promise I won’t let them keep you.”
“Sweetie, someone ran me off the road, then came down to try to finish me. I’m more worried that they will be looking for me at the hospital, than I am about my injuries.” I said. “And yes I’m paranoid, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t try to kill me.”
“Okay, well let me see how bad you are hurt,” she said. She did a real quick exam for broken bones. She pressed on my check. I felt a sharp pain and gasped. “You probably got some cracked ribs. Let me listen to your lungs. Your lungs sounds fine. Now listen to me you walked about a mile after that fall. It doesn’t look as though you did any damage except you oozed a lot of blood. Your clothes are ruined for sure,” she said.
“Well they came from the army and navy discount store, so I don’t really care all that much,” I said.
“I have heard a lot about you. It all points to you being a bad ass bitch and hard to kill. So why not call someone to meet us at the High Mountain Clinic. They can clean you up and get you ready to leave. You are going to need some clothes to wear out of there. You can have someone bring them to you. You will be there a couple of hours at least, so there is no rush but make the call now. The clinic isn’t in Warren County, so you should have some wiggle room.”
“Okay, I’ll go with that,” I said. I made my call to The Brit.
“Allen this is Sylvia. I know it’s really early for you guys, but I need to ask a favor. I had a bike accident and I am headed to The High Mountain Medical Clinic to get a check up. I am going to need some clothes though. Can you run by the house and get a pair of those loose fitting cargo pants and a big sweat shirt. Take Jeremy with you, he will know what to get. I’m sorry to ask, but I didn’t have anyone else.”
“If you ever call anyone else I will never speak to you again,” he said. I’ll be at the clinic when you get there. I’m going to give Jeremy your key and have him come up as well. So just relax, it’s all taken care of.”
“Britt bring a tool or two,” I said.
“So you ready now?” the girl asked.
“Yeah, you gonna hold this for me?” I asked reaching under the parka painfully to remove the .22 mag revolver.
“I’ll hold it for you no sweat,” she said with a smile.
“And this,” I handed her the derringer.
She helped me out to the gurney where she told me to lie down. I did as she said. I think she gave me anything, anyway I fell right asleep. I worked through the pain I guess. She might have given me something for it.
The next thing I knew I was coming around in an examining room. “Well hell there Miss Porter. We don’t get many celebrities in here.”
“Well you don’t have one in me. I’m just your average bike rider who ran off the road.” I said.
“Funny I was told you were Madona. That’s what we have on your chart. By the way you were lucky with paramedic you had. She did a tour in Iraq at the end of the war there. She is good and knows how to keep her mouth shut.”
“Okay,” I said.
“This clinic is run by Molly Merritt she is a nurse practitioner. She is more than qualified to take care of this. There are two Registered Nurses and a couple of technicians so we can handle most things. We will send you on to the hospital, if you really need it, but not if you don’t.” she said.
“So which one are you? You all wear scrubs,” I asked.
“I’m Molly, so let’s take a look at you. I would ask you to get out of those clothes but it looks like we are going to have to cut you out of them,” she said.
“Well Molly, like I told the paramedic, you can cut them off. I shop at the army navy store.”
“Is that were you got that cool pair of pants,” She asked.
“Yeah, and the Russian commando tee shirt,” I said.
“Okay this may hurt some,” she said.
“Why is it you say that like it might not, when you know it is going to hurt like hell?” I asked.
“Good point, you have had a little pain killer, but it wasn’t much so just bare with me.” She said. She cut the top off first. “Good you don’t have on a bra that will make it easier.”
“Not to mention that I have almost no breasts to worry about.” I said.
“Well believe it or not you have an abrasion on your left one,” she said. “Next we are going to cut your slacks off, then get a chest picture of those ribs.” That’s exactly what she did. Of course she also cut my bikini panties off me.
She left me to drift off to sleep while they got the x-ray developed. I was pretty out of it when The Brit came into the examining room. “Do you have any idea how many hoops I had to jump through to get in to see you?” he asked.
“What,” I asked.
“They told me they didn’t have you. I knew they were lying, now the question is why are they lying.” He asked.
“A couple of guys ran me off the road then came down looking for me and not to call me an ambulance. I put a shank in one’s guts and fired a couple of rounds off to scare the other one,” I explained.
“That does explain it,” The Brit said.
“Is the paramedic still here?” I asked.
“Yeah I think so,” he said.
“Tell her who you are, and that I called you. She has a package for you,” I explained.
“Okay you, out,” Molly said looking very stern and looking around for a weapon.
“Molly this is the love of my life, not to worry,” I said.
“Sylvia you are unbelievable, how do you make such friends,” he said.
“I was going to ask the same thing,” she said. “I’m Molly her nurse.”
“Well Molly, she looks to be in good hand. Now I need to be sure she stays that way. So if you will excuse me, I will make a call or two.” he said.
“Don’t do it Brit,” I said.
“If I don’t, when the word filters down, and you know it will. There will be at least two men mad as hell at me. I would rather not have those two angry at me, thank you very much. There will be more trouble than even you can imagine. For the foreseeable future, I will try to keep them where they belong.” he said and laughed.
“I know who you are supposed to be, but who the hell are you,” Molly asked.
“Just a simple country girl trying to get by,” I said.
“Sure, well then this is going to hurt like hell, but it has to be done. I am going to clean and dress those scrapes.” she said.
“You better hope you don’t make me scream. The Brit has great reaction, but unfortunately he acts in haste often.” I said to her.
“I’ll try to take it easy,” she said. It was a minute later that one of the techs came in with a pan of water and a bottle of surgical soap. I recognized the mild antibiotic soap.
Molly scrubbed and I winced. “By the way your ribs are broken but the will heal if you don’t put any pressure on them. So stay in bed when you get home for at least a week. It looks to me like you will have pretty good protection.” she said.
“Honey you don’t know the half of it,” I said.
I couldn’t sleep through the body wash, but I kept my eyes closed and winced often. Still it was done without my making any terrible screams. “Well why don’t you stay here till we close at six tonight. We can keep and eye on you and be sure you don’t slip into shock. You had a pretty good fall.” Molly said.
“Well I would rather leave, but you do have a point. I will sleep her till 6PM. So what time is it?” I asked.
“It’s just noon. We got you cleaned up pretty fast. Would you like to talk to your friends?” she asked.
“Yes I certainly would,” I said.
“You are coming home with us tonight,” The Brit said.
“I have been thinking I probably don’t need to go to my place. I need for you to find out, if a man checked into the hospital about the time I called you. He will have a puncture wound in the gut. There might be a second one with a gunshot wound somewhere.
The Brit nodded and then left. He didn’t come back. I slept fitfully till 6PM, when the clinic closed for the night. They slipped me into my clothes first then into the backseat of the SUV.
Before I left I showed them my medical insurance card of course. Molly also kissed me on the cheek before I left. When we got to the pub Liam was standing in the alley waiting for the SUV. The helped me from the SUV while they also watch the area closely. Nothing seemed to move, so they led me into the pub and up the stairs. Now that was a real test of my ability to handle pain. Climbing those stairs brought tears to my eyes.
Once I got up stairs I had to argue with them to force them to put me on the sofa. I managed to drop the cargo pants before I climbed in the sofa that Jeremy made into a bed for me.
Liam sat down beside me with The Brit standing beside him. “Okay now Sylvia what happened exactly?” he asked.
“I don’t know exactly. I was headed from my house to the plaza on the bike. Somewhere along the way someone forced me off the road. I know there were at least two of them. They came down to finish me off, that was how they put it by the way. I shanked one of them in the gut and took a few shots at the other one. I think I scared the one I shanked into heading for the emergency room, which is why I didn’t want to go there.”
“Okay we start calling in favors,” Liam said taking his cell phone out.
“Liam this in not a Swamp Dog operation. I will find them and take care of it,” I said.
“Of course, we will just find out what we can before they leave town,” he said. With that he dialed a number then said into the phone. “She is scraped up a little, but you should see the other guy. No we are gonna see the other guy, she thinks he checked into the hospital emergency room this morning with a belly wound. Probably a John Doe or something like it.” Liam said. “Okay call me when you know something. Yeah the homeland security ID.”
I had an idea Liam had at least one fake law enforcement ID.
